Story line

Matalada, widely recognized internationally as "To the Moon and Back," is a heartwarming Thai drama that gained significant popularity upon its release in 2023 and its subsequent broadcast on the Philippines' GMA Network in 2024. The story follows the life of Matalada, a vibrant and eternally optimistic young woman who was raised in an unconventional but deeply loving household. Her father, Grace, is a kind-hearted man who identifies as LGBTQ+ and operates a successful cabaret show in Pattaya. Growing up in such an environment, Matalada possesses a unique perspective on life, valuing kindness and human connection above societal status or material wealth. Her world changes when she moves to Bangkok and becomes neighbors with a man whose life is the polar opposite of hers.

The narrative shifts to focus on Dr. Purim, a brilliant but emotionally detached neurosurgeon who has spent his entire life under the suffocating control of his father, a man obsessed with perfection and reputation. Purim has always followed the path laid out for him, suppressing his own desires and hobbies, such as his secret passion for baking. When Matalada enters his life—initially by mistaking a Halloween cake he made for a sinister omen—her infectious positivity and genuine personality begin to dismantle the walls he has built around himself. As they grow closer, Purim discovers a world of color and emotion he never knew existed, while Matalada finds herself drawn to the quiet vulnerability behind his professional facade.

However, their budding relationship faces considerable challenges from their contrasting backgrounds. Purim's father strongly disapproves of Matalada due to her father's lifestyle and her modest upbringing, creating a central conflict between traditional social expectations and personal happiness. The show masterfully handles these tensions, emphasizing that family is defined by love and support rather than blood or conventional structures. It also explores secondary romances and the internal struggles of its supporting cast, adding layers to the exploration of modern relationships and the importance of self-acceptance in a judgmental society.

"To the Moon and Back" has been lauded for its progressive and sensitive portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes, family dynamics, and mental health. Unlike many dramas that rely on intense tropes, this series is celebrated as a "healing" drama that focuses on character development and positive messaging. The chemistry between leads James Jirayu and Toey Jarinporn was a major highlight, earning them praise for their natural and endearing performances. In the Philippines, the show resonated with audiences for its "feel-good" atmosphere, making it a standout title on GMA's Heart of Asia block and a poignant reminder of the transformative power of kindness.
