Ate Gay taken to hospital as chemo complications turn serious

omedian Gil Aducal Morales, popularly known as Ate Gay, faces another health setback in his ongoing fight against mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a type of cancer affecting the salivary glands.

In a recent Facebook update, Ate Gay revealed that he had to be rushed to the hospital due to side effects from chemotherapy and treatments.

“Late na ako nakaranas ng side effect,” Ate Gay shared. ” ‘Di makakain dahil sa daming singaw ng bibig ko kaya nagpaconfine. 48hrs ‘yan nakatusok sa akin ‘yan. (‘Yan) muna ang paraan ng pagpapakain.”

The comedian posted a photo from his hospital bed, showing his resilience despite the challenges.

Netizens quickly took to the comment section to express love and support, praying for Ate Gay’s recovery

Just last November, Ate Gay celebrated a major milestone after completing chemotherapy. He expressed gratitude to his supporters as he continues with radiation and immunotherapy treatments.

During the first session of the therapy, Ate Gay received what he calls a miracle as his tumor shrunk from 10 centimeters to 8.5 centimeters after just a few days.

Last September, many were shocked when Ate Gay revealed his stage IV cancer diagnosis. He also expressed appreciation to everyone who supported him during his treatment.

Arnold Clavio

Saksi news anchor Arnold Clavio was one lucky guy because of his presence of mind he was able to bring himself to the hospital safely after suffering from a hemorrhagic stroke on June 11, 2024.

In an interview with ‘Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho’, Dr. Greg David Dayrit explained what happened to Clavio. He said, “Nagkaroon siya ng intracerebral hemorrhage. It’s a brain hemorrhage due to a rupture of an artery sa brain. So may pumutok na artery dun sa kanyang utak,”

Dr. Dayrit went on to say, “Lucky for Arnold, ‘yung naging hemorrhage niya maliit lang. So, it’s a small part dun sa left side nung kaniyang thalamus. Ang effect nito usually, on the other side. Sa contralateral, right side niya ang affected. May konting weakness, meron siyang numbness at saka balance instability.

“Ang galing nung ginawa ni Arnold, presence of mind pumunta na siya kaagad sa nearest hospital.”

Arnold’s comeback

Arnold also stated in an interview with Jessica Soho that the doctors refer to him as a ‘lucky person.’

“Ang tawag niya sa akin lucky man kasi out of danger na raw ako, rehabilitation na lang. Nung time na ‘yun, alam mo, Ma’am Jess, hindi ko siya naisip kasi naka-focus ako makarating sa opsital. Pero nung nagsi-sink in na, sinuwerte ka na. Niligtas ka, agad pumasok sa isip ko naku totoong may himala ang Diyos. Hindi ka niya pababayaan.”

On August 5, Arnold made a triumphant return to his anchoring job in ‘Unang Hirit’ and ‘Super Radyo’ on DZBB.

Darren Espanto

Darren Espanto experienced a severe stomach pain upon arriving in Manila after a trip to Los Angeles. He later found out that it was appendicitis.

He wrote on his Instagram post, “From the airport to the hospital. Woke up on the plane from Los Angeles at around 1 AM (Manila Time) and felt a bit of pain in my stomach. Didn’t mind it and thought I was just super hungry. We landed 4 hours later and the pain got worse once I got into the car.

“Thought it was just gas but the pain became unbearable. I asked to be taken to the nearest hospital from my house and they had me take a CT Scan right away. Found out I had appendicitis and had to get an appendectomy immediately. Thankfully, my appendix hadn’t ruptured yet. Went to our doctor at St. Luke’s and I had a laparoscopy all within 5 hours of everything happening!”

Julie Anne San  Jose

Asia’s Limitless Star Julie Anne San Jose was among the star-studded guest in Regine Velasquez’s concert on April 20, 2024 at the Mall of Asia Arena. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to perform due to some health concerns.

In a statement she posted on Facebook, Julie Anne explained, “Congratulations, Ate Regine Velasquez-Alcasid for a very successful concert! Your talent is truly undeniable, and I feel fortunate to have witnessed it throughout my journey as a singer. You are my inspiration.I would like to express my gratitude for inviting me to be part of your concert. I was incredibly excited to share the stage with you again last night but unfortunately, things didn’t go my way due to health concerns and I appreciate your understanding. I love you.”

She also talked about what she went through before heading to the hospital.

Julie told Unang Hirit, “[Paggising] bigla na lang ako nagsusuka. Tapos it went on for hours e, tapos sabi ko ayaw ko muna dalhin ‘yung sarili ko sa ospital, kasi baka mamaya mawawala naman. Pero, like talagang nung dire-diretso na hindi na talaga tumitigil nagpa-ospital ako.

“Kasi natakot din ako. Tsaka ‘yung family ko natakot.”

Jessa Zaragoza

Jessa Zaragoza’s hit song “Bakit Pa?” wassomething that best described her past health concern that has affected her voice.

In a tell-all post on Instagram, the ‘Pepito Manaloto’ actress revealed what happened to her: “Hello World! I’ve been MIA recently ever since the aftermath of Dingdong’s 37th Anniversary concert at the Theatre at Solaire last July 19. Prior to the concert, I got really sick. Ni-rounds ko na ata yung mga ospital. Cardinal, St. Lukes, Diliman. Tinawid ko lang talaga sa concert. Nakaraos naman ng mahusay. Salamat sa Diyos.

“After the big event, I underwent an important scheduled procedure at St. Lukes Global. You see, months before the concert, apart from the other sickness I dealt with, I had noticed some hoarseness coming from my voice and upon examination, discovered I had a Vocal polyp and Esophageal varices on my vocal folds. This is the second time I’ve dealt with something to this extent, so it definitely alarmed me that I had to go through this again.”

She continued, “While I was recuperating, I caught a bug. Uso talaga ngayon. Di talaga ako tinantanan ng sakit‍ The stress really took a toll on my health. Napakanta na talaga ako ng kanta ko, ‘Parang di ko yata kaya!’

Despite this, Jessa was still in high spirits and looked forward to being able to return to work, I’m still not back to 100% but I’m feeling much better every single day. I Praise GOD for His grace and healing. I can’t wait to prepare and get back to work as soon as possible

Zsazsa Padilla

Then, the dearest mom of ‘Encantadia’ star Karylle further elaborated that in 2023 she had an infection that was harder to cure and even taking antibiotics proved to be ineffective.

“Last year, the infection I was having was harder to cure. I became resistant to most antibiotics and tests showed that I was already having a [pee] reflux and the function of my left kidney was so much lower than my usual,”

The Kapamilya singer flew to Singapore to find out more about her health condition through laparoscopic surgery.

“We had a teleconsultation then Conrad and I took a 3 day trip to Singapore so I could see Dr Shirley Bang of Advanced Urology in Mt Elizabeth Novena Hospital and she could run some tests. When we got home, we had another teleconsultation to discuss the rest of the test results. They told me they could do laparoscopic surgery to correct my problem. We set a date and now I’m still in the hospital recuperating. I’m glad they didn’t open me up.

“And of course my case wasn’t an easy one since I was already operated on before. And there are scar tissues to deal with. Dr Bang said the surgery was straightforward. They didn’t perform a boari flap as planned. Part of the ureter was cut then reinserted in my bladder. And I have 6 new holes from the laparoscopic surgery.”

Zsazsa’s recent health bout didn’t dampen her positive outlook and remained filled with hope that her life would return to normal soon.

“My body is a map of all the surgical battles it’s been through. This is my third surgery with regard to the left side of my kidney. In 2012, after Dolphy died, I had a growth taken out so a partial nephrectomy was performed on my left kidney. By the grace of God, I pray that it continues to function so that I may be healthier. I can’t wait to be doing my normal routine like playing badminton with Conrad in the mornings.”

Iza Calzado

TV-movie actress Iza Calzado was reminded of the importance of making ‘better choices’ when it comes to her health after getting sick for over a week due to pharyngitis and bronchitis.

In an Instagram post on September 1, Iza said even her household got sick, too. She wrote this insightful reminder, “Over a week now of being sick and even missing out on some work commitments. Pushed my body too hard again. Almost our entire household got sick but I was the one who got it bad. Mindful of where my energy goes.”

Vlogger and actress Kristel Fulgar had a challenging beginning in 2024 after undergoing surgery to remove a leg tumor in her calf area.

Kristel was diagnosed with Schwannoma. Based on the information provided by the National Cancer Institute, schwannoma is a rare type of tumor that forms in the nervous system. Schwannoma grows from cells called Schwann cells. Schwann cells protect and support the nerve cells of the nervous system. Schwannoma tumors are often benign, which means they are not cancerous. But, in rare cases, they can become cancerous.

Kristel documented her leg surgery done in January 2024 via her vlog. She admitted that being diagnosed with Schwannoma affected her mental health.

“It was the hardest challenge I faced in my life. It really affected my mental health and triggered my anxiety. There were a lot of ‘what ifs’ and I cried every night to sleep.”

“Meron akong problem sa ovaries, and that’s how it started. I also have PCOS.

“Guys, kung may maramdaman kayon sakit, magpacheck kayo agad. Huwag niyo hintayin lumala. Siguro kung hindi ako pumunta ng ospital, wala na talaga ako. I also got fluid in my stomach, na sobrang napuno na siya. Day by day sa ospital umaangat ‘yung fluid sa tiyan ko. Hindi ako buntis.

“‘Yung sakit, hindi na ako makahinga, konting lakad ko lang parang hihimatayin na ako, nanlalamig na buong body ko.” the Kapamilya actress recounted.

Shaira Diaz

‘Unang Hirit’ host Shaira Diaz kept a positive mindset after sharing the news on Facebook in October 2024 that she underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy.

Talking about her medical procedure, Shaira went on to explain what happened to her appendix. “Ang normal appendix daw ay kasing nipis ng eyelid, ang nakuha sakin ay triple ng laki niya, parang skinless longganisa. Mabuti nalang talaga at hindi pumutok. Salamat sa Diyos.”

She added, “Maraming salamat, Panginoon, sa successful operation. I’m now recovering but still in pain so please pray for me. Thank you.
